Red Balloon Security

Firmware hardening and intrusion detection for embedded devices, grown out of Columbia University research

Red Balloon Security was founded by researchers from Columbia University who demonstrated attacks on printers and network equipment. Its Symbiote technology injects runtime defenses into existing firmware of devices such as routers, printers, PLCs and avionics without vendor source code. The company also sells an automated firmware analysis platform and offers services to US defense and critical infrastructure customers, and it maintains the open-source OFRAK reverse engineering framework.

Focus: embedded device defense, firmware analysis.
