Device as a service (DaaS)

A commercial model where the customer pays a recurring fee for a connected device bundled with connectivity, software, support and replacement, instead of buying the hardware outright.

Under device as a service the vendor keeps ownership of the hardware and sells its use. The fee covers the device, the data plan, the cloud service, updates, and a swap when a unit fails. For the customer this converts a capital purchase into an operating expense and removes the need to run fleet management internally. For the vendor it creates recurring revenue and a reason to design devices that last and are cheap to support.

The model fits well where the customer wants the measurement, not the gadget: temperature monitoring in a restaurant, trackers on rental equipment, air-quality sensing in offices. The risks are financial, since the vendor funds the hardware up front, and contractual, since the SLA defines what happens when devices go offline. Clear terms on data ownership and on what happens at contract end are essential.
