Smart agriculture is the umbrella term for IoT on the farm. It includes precision agriculture for crops, livestock monitoring with wearable tags that track activity and health, greenhouse climate control, automated irrigation, and monitoring of silos and tanks. The common thread is replacing periodic manual checks with continuous measurement in places that are large, remote and often without power or connectivity.
Low-power radios such as LoRaWAN and, increasingly, satellite IoT make coverage possible, and solar-powered nodes remove the dependence on mains. The obstacles are cost relative to farm margins, ruggedness, and the time farmers have to interpret data, which favors systems that deliver a simple action such as “irrigate zone three” rather than a chart. The guide IoT in agriculture looks at concrete deployments.
