Smart retail applies IoT to the physical store. RFID tags on garments give near real-time inventory and enable fast stock counts; electronic shelf labels update prices centrally; beacons and cameras measure footfall and dwell time; and computer vision can detect empty shelves or support checkout-free formats. Refrigeration monitoring and energy management apply the same sensors as any other building.
The strongest cases are inventory accuracy and shrink reduction, where RFID has a measurable effect. Customer analytics is more contentious: tracking individuals raises privacy concerns and regulation varies by country, so aggregate, anonymized counts are the safer design. As in logistics, the technology works best when it feeds existing merchandising and replenishment systems rather than a separate dashboard.
